It is good to give your bird a variety of surfaces to perch on but natural wood bird perches are the overall best. In the wild birds choose to spend most of their time perched on tree branches. Giving them natural wood perches like manzanita branches are the most similar to what they would choose on their own.

Just because it is natural wood doesn’t always mean it is safe for your bird. Many plants produce and contain compounds that are toxic to some birds like parrots and some of these compounds are in the plants wood. Manzanita bird perches are popular because they are not toxic to birds. There are many other types of wood that are safe for bird perches and accessories. Your veterinarian should be able to tell you which wood is safe for your bird.
